Hi Lynn, Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts. As a Canadian Red Cross Training Partner my instructors teach the current first aid protocols advised by the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance and other recognized first aid organizations.
The RICE (Rest, Immobilize, Cold, Elevate) protocol is meant to be used for the first few hours following an injury. As you said, it is the first step. After 48 hours, other strategies can be used including heat, movement and exercise.
