Hi there,

Thanks for reading and taking the time to share your thoughts.

Basic first aid training for the public differs from what those working with limited resources in armed conflict are taught. Using any coagulate is advanced first aid, but applying coffee grounds to a wound is not advised.

The Red Cross recommends a two-step process for dealing with a mild to moderate bleed: First, cover the wound. Second, apply direct pressure. It's important to note that the pressure, not the bandage, controls the bleeding. In the case of a severe wound, you may need to pack it with gauze before applying pressure, as you suggested.

Covering the wounded area with a clean bandage is ideal, but if a person doesn't have one, they could use a clean cloth, T-shirt, sock, or even a clean diaper or sanitary pad.

If blood soaks through the bandage, apply another one on top. If bleeding on a limb is not controlled with bandaging, apply a tourniquet if one is available. When heading out into the wilderness, I agree that it is wise to pack a tourniquet.

Thanks again for joining the conversation.
