Oh Andrew, this story is a gem! I hope it gets boosted. Every reader will relate, as we've all had to make fashion choices that meant we would fit in and be uncomfortable, or be ridiculed by our peers.

When pencil skirts became fashionable, my friends and I sewed the side slits in our regulation school uniform skirts. This made the skirts so tight around the knees we could barely walk. To get on the bus we had to grab the handrail as far up as possible and then hop on with one foot and swing the other knee around to get up the step.

At the same time we were sewing our jeans into the current skin tight drainpipe style. This was in the days before stretch denim. The jeans were so ridiculously narrow and tight, to get them on you would have to lie down or jump up and down while yanking hard on the waistband for a few minutes and sucking in your belly. Finally you'd get the zip up but then you couldn't breathe for the rest of the night and god help you if you got drunk and fell over. Your friends would have to help you up. Those with the days! 😂🤣
