The use of tourniquets and pressure bandages for snakebites is controversial. Although they can limit the spread of the venom to other parts of the body, they increase the chance of tissue damage by concentrating the venom in the affected area. The WHO, Red Cross, Mayo Clinic, NIH and others do not recommend tourniquets for snakebites.

Antivenom is the best treatment for venomous snakebites and should be given as soon as possible after a bite. First aid measures include calling EMS and keeping the person and affected area still to limit the spread of the poison.
